The biggest hurdles are constant pain, lack of energy, staying hydrated and having an appetite. Chemotherapy makes her tired and fatigued. It's a tiredness that doesn't go away after a good nights sleep, that brings exhaustion after the very least bit of effort. So please pray that every cancer cell die, that we experience "spontaneous remission" which is doctor-speak for a miracle, for the absence of pain, renewed strength and a desire to eat and drink more. Many of you ask how the children are coping and for the most part they're OK. We've scheduled counselling sessions for the new year and hope that this might be helpful. Grandma and Grandpa have moved in for which we're so grateful. They take care of running the house, as well as bringing the girls to and from school and to and from their activities. My boss has let me work half-time until the end of the year which has helped a lot with all the trips to the hospital. It's still hard to accept the reality of the situation. Noah goes to a friends house twice a week and plays with a boy his age. On the other days he goes to a retired ladies home. She's a very good influence on him and has taught him better manners and how to tidy up his toys. We're cautious about keeping him healthy and free from colds and flu's. Lee Anne's immunity dips really low about 10 days after treatment and a regular sickness would be very dangerous for her. With the lack of energy and the necessity to stay away from crowds, she hasn't been out at all apart from our trips to the hospital. As such, as long as you call or text ahead it would be nice to have a few people drop by for a short visit. A lady from the Nanny Angel Network also comes once a week to play with the younger children and they really enjoy playing games with her. We're also blessed to have a team of ladies from the church who come clean, prepare food and pray for us on Monday mornings. Big thank you here. There's also people who've brought over dinner or who take some of the children out for a few hours. For these acts of kindness we're truly grateful. Another friend set up a fund for us that people have used to send us money which is especially appreciated. I sometimes tell her that I'd like her back teaching piano lessons soon and hope so much that she will. In fact, it's hope that keeps me going and there's a Bible verse in the book of Romans, chapter 5, verse 3 that says 3Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character,hope. I struggle a lot why God has not healed Lee yet, why He is allowing this suffering and in what way this whole journey brings glory to Him. But as I write this, I googled "God's glory" and it's simply the manifestation of His presence. Lee and I can certainly attest to the fact that God is present with us. That God is working through so many lives to share and practically demonstrate His love for us. No more though, than sending His Son to die for us.

Second chemo, second time round
Hi, it's Nick. Everything is different this time. Not just being at Lakeridge Health in Oshawa with new doctors but experiencing a new part of the journey. Today we're having a second chemotherapy and here's Lee relaxing just prior to getting her chemotherapy drugs. It doesn't hurt, there's just a cool sensation in her arm. There's very little nausea and a good dose of Gravol makes her sleep through the majority of the 6 hour treatment.

More chemo
Hello everyone,
I started another round of chemo just over a week ago. I have switched my care to the Oshawa Cancer Centre and we have another excellent team of doctors looking after me.
My health was declining for a few weeks and doctors found that the cancer had come back very aggressively. One of my doctors described it as a tsunami.
The chemo seems to be working as it should. We are thankful for this.
Please keep our family in prayer as this is a very hard time for us.

Fall Again
Had a successful ostomy reversal in August.
We also had news of shrinking cancer at Princess Margaret. This was "unusual."
Keep praying. My next scan is September 25 and treatment decisions will be based on this.
Please pray that no treatment will be necessary!!!! God is healing.
The girls started at a wonderful Christian school this week. We met with all their teachers last night and Nick and I are thrilled. The academics, class sizes and general environment are sparkling!! Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
The girls do miss their old friends, but we hope they will be over to jump on our new trampoline!! Can't believe I am allowing it, but life is for living and bouncing.

Next
Yesterday we learned that my liver still shows signs of cancer.
I will be going to Princess Margaret Hospital now to see if there is a clinical trial that I may qualify for. In my case this does does not include placebos. It will be more chemotherapy.
We are trusting God to heal. Many fervent prayers are going up on our behalf. Though we waver and doubt sometimes, Jesus is the rock we are putting our feet on as "by His stripes we were healed."
In all cases life is short. Even if we do live to be 90 it is over in the blink of an eye.
We need to be ready for eternity.
For God so loved the world he gave his only son that whoever believes in Him will not die but have eternal life. John 3:16
We inhabit a world that is subject to decay because of our wrong choices and actions, but God has made a way for each one of us to be with Him forever. He promises to remove our sins as far as the East is from the West when we believe and are sorry.
Jesus said very clearly, "I am the way, the truth and the life no man comes to the Father except through me."
If just one person is saved for eternity by this message it will be worth it all.
I am believing in healing because my God is powerful and He declares Himself my Healer. However, my eternity is absolutely settled by my Saviour who conquered death itself and offers us all the free gift of life everlasting. Don't miss out dear family and friends. Believe in Jesus, turn from wrong ways and be filled with His Spirit that He promises each believer. Jesus loves you.

Post Chemo Results
Hello all,
Results of my post chemo CT scan are somewhat inconclusive. This means that the doctors cannot tell if what they see is cancer or not. Only time will tell.
At this point I must wait two months and then have another CT scan to see if there is any change. Good news is that my CA125 level is still very low at 9.
We continue to pray for complete healing. This really is miracle territory now.

Post Chemo CT Scan
Hello Everyone,
It is four weeks post chemo. I will have a CT scan today at 7pm and receive the results on May 6th.
I feel quite well all things considered. My energy level will be low for a while to come as my body continues to recover from surgery and my cells from chemical assault.
Nick and I are just back from a week long trip to Florida. After our cold winter, the warm pool and ocean were amazing. We took the two little girls with us as the big girls had their turn in Florida already.
We are blessed to have Nick's parents here with us from England. They kept our household running through basketball and concert season while we were away.

March Break
We are enjoying a few days at the cottage and I am in excellent health. The last chemo treatment is next Wednesday-March 25th. This also happens to be Alexandra's 14th Birthday.
We will have a double reason to celebrate.
Making it through surgery and 6 chemo treatments this winter has been a true miracle. It is always more difficult for patients going through treatment during flu season. Praise God. Our Healer.
In a few days Nick's parents will arrive from England. They will stay with us for a month and my parents will be taking a much needed break in Florida.
I will update you all on how the next chemo treatment goes.

I am not sick
The anti nausea drugs are so great these days that I do not feel sick at all and have a good appetite.
Of course, I am a bit more tired than usual, but Mom, Dad and Nick are taking great care of me.
Please pray that I stay well through this time of lowered immunity. I am fighting a little respiratory thing, holding it at bay with my oil of oregano (super stuff), warm drinks, and fresh beet/kale juice. (Nick's specialty).

Well on the road to recovery
On the other side of the mountain. Today is the 1st of my final 3 chemo treatments. CA-125 level at 14, praise God it's so low after surgery, when it could have gone higher. Iron levels in the normal range for the first time since starting chemo too.

Simply Home
Day 9 post surgery and learning to take it easy. Thank you for the flowers, home help, child care and meals this week. Noah always game for outing if you've got time to drop by in the morning.
Most thanks to my Mom and Dad who've held down the fort amidst the minions.
I've been for several very short walks and so grateful that I remain pain and infection free. I've also received a few visitors and many of your texts, emails and phone calls. Thank you.
As a testament to the Lord's healing, several nurses who've visited me this week asked how many weeks I'd been home .... rather than how many days!
Next chemo has already been scheduled for February 12th which is quite soon after surgery too,

Coming Home Today
Pain free, haemoglobin levels up and scheduled to be discharged around 11am. God is good.
Hospital admin took longer than expected but we're home now.

Room with a View
We are enjoying the view out of the window of our hospital room. The nurses say it is one of the nicest rooms on the floor. It looks westward over a treed ravine and, in the distance, Bayview Avenue at Eglington.
Lee has been eating and drinking well today and is off the IV. The last nurse told us earlier that if it were up to her she'd discharge Lee today! Now waiting for haemoglobin level to pass 90 g/L, the higher the better.
Another benefit of the room is that it is tucked away at the end of the hall, so it is nice and quiet with less germs walking by!!!
Last night I had a very good sleep! However, my blood pressure was low through the night and the nurses were concerned. A little IV fluid fixed me up.
This morning I was told that I needed a blood transfusion due to lowering levels of haemoglobin and, as a result, a rising heart rate.
Nick arrived bringing a delicious juice of kale, apple, orange and ginger. (He is making this at at our friends' house nearby).
Then we had some great news. The nurse came back and saw that my blood pressure and heart rate were normal again. My bloodwork had also returned showing that my haemoglobin levels are on the way back up. The transfusion is not necessary at the moment.
My pain is being very well managed, and I have been able to do a few spins of the ward today.

It's now 10:05pm and I'm preparing to leave as the ward settles down to the night routine. The hum of the ventilation and gentle sound of compressed air compliments soft voices.
A friend, that used to be a nurse, came by for a short visit. After she left she sent a text that spoke of how well Lee Anne is healing for day 2 post op .... amazing that there is no redness or swelling. Another testament to the power of effective prayer.
As we read in James 5:16 from 'The Message' translation of the Bible,
"The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with. Elijah, for instance, human just like us, prayed hard that it wouldn't rain, and it didn't—not a drop for three and a half years. Then he prayed that it would rain, and it did. The showers came and everything started growing again. My dear friends, if you know people who have wandered off from God's truth, don't write them off. Go after them. Get them back and you will have rescued precious lives from destruction and prevented an epidemic of wandering away from God."
So thank you for your prayers that have again been answered today.

Signs and Wonders
"Amazing", "phenomenal response", "sense of calm during the operation" ... these were just some of the words that we just heard from a resident who helped perform Lee Anne's surgery yesterday. She went on to say that, "You don't look like you just had major surgery yesterday" and I say she looks radiant. Come ...
"In summary, Lee Cowley had a metastatic stage IV ovarian cancer... she was rendered optimally debulked with microscopic residual."
We believe that this Jesus, that we read about in the Bible, is alive and working miracles today at the exact times and in the specific ways that so many of you pray for Lee Anne and our family.
The resident also said that, "When we looked inside everything appeared normal...we didn't see a mass as such...we removed organs and structures (that are known to be preferential sites for ovarian cancer to spread) as more of a precaution". Further and perhaps more importantly, the surgeon's closing remarks in the clinical notes reads,
In other words we believe that the cancer has gone, a great and miraculous sign we believe is from Jesus our healer. As the bible reminds us..
John 4:46-53 NIV
Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed. I should also tell you that Lee Anne got up and walked all around the ward this morning twice and again this afternoon; something that the nurses were surprised about .. but for us just another miracle.

Surgery Day
9:55pm Lee comfortable and ready for a peaceful nights sleep. Thank you Lord and for all of your prayers.
7:30pm: Doctor has increased the epidural anaesthetic dosage
6:08pm: Lee Anne asks that we pray for the pain to go away.

4:30pm: Lee is finally in her room. It took longer to get from recovery and the ward is busy. She is very sleepy but spoke a couple of sentences, ate a few spoonfuls of ice chips and had a sip of water. A pastor from church came to pray for us and chat with me for a little while.
12:40pm: The doctor just came down and said that she was very pleased. She was happy and smiley and used the words "great results". Praise God that she was able to remove all the remaining cancer in Lee's abdomen (which isn't always the case). Lee will likely be in the hospital for the next 4-5 days. It's going to be many months until she'll be completely recovered though. She's sleeping now and I'm waiting to see her.

9:09am: Angels in the operating room. What confidence we have knowing that He will command his angels concerning Lee, guarding her in all her ways. Psalm 91:11. How the angel of the Lord encamps around her, for she fears Him and He delivers her. Psalm 34:7
8:30am: Waiting and remembering Psalm 112:6-8 from yesterday, just have no fear and trust in the Lord. Righteous from Christ's death on the cross for us, saved by His grace. Waiting to hear the miraculous news
Psalm 112:6-8. Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
7:45am: Lee dressed in the hospital gown and chatting to another patient. All prepped and ready. Another friend of a friend who works at the hospital (who we sold our last home to), comes down and prays for Lee. After the gurney ride, a kiss and goodbye until after surgery which likely begins around 9am (anaesthetist takes an hour apparently) Truly in Jesus, the great physician's, hands now.
6:30am: Receiving texts and emails of encouragement from the early risers. God is with us, lighting up the sky to show us that He is with us
6:08am: Waiting at surgical services reception, after a brisk and refreshing walk to the hospital from another friend of a friend who offered her driveway as a parking spot just across the street from the hospital
5:30am: Chatting with family friends who opened up their home so we didn't have to take the long early drive from Brooklin
4:55am: Awake and getting ready. We both slept well. Thank you for your prayers for a restful night
7:30pm last night: At a prayer group, declaring the promises of God. Cancer mountain be gone in Jesus name and we believe it to be true
Mark 11:23-26: “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

Glorious Unfolding
Tomorrow is the day of the surgery. It is scheduled for 7:45am.
We are praying for our incredible surgeon/doctor Dr. Lillian Gien and all of her team at Sunnybrook. May she operate with great wisdom and skill. We thank God for providing such an amazing doctor for us. She has been a great advocate. Having young children herself, she has acted with great compassion on our behalf. God is using her as the very hands of our Great Healer, Jesus Christ.
When this diagnosis came at us, I prayed that God would "open the doors of our medical system and bring healing to my body." These doors have opened to us in undeniably miraculous ways.
Another miracle has been the wonderful hospitality of our friends who live near Sunnybrook. Kathleen and George, dear university friends, and Ken and Helen, our very best long-time family friends, who have opened up their beautiful homes to us. This has provided respite from the storm. Because of them, we have not had the stress of fighting traffic before early morning appointments.
Another blessing has been the provision of a parking spot at Kathleen's friend Kiersten's house. (A lovely 5min walk from the hospital). We are so grateful to Kiersten, who despite never having met us, has also opened her home to Nick while I am in hospital. Her family has offered Nick a comfortable place to sleep, and even offered to help make my morning kale juice that has kept me extra healthy this season!!!
God's words from the book of Joshua 1:9 are my battle cry. Our living God says,
"Have I not commanded you be strong and courageous, do not be terrified, do not be discouraged for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you may go"....to Sunnybrook and beyond.

A song by Stephen Curtis Chapman, the title track of his new collection by that name, has encouraged me greatly. Chapman's family walked through unimaginable tragedy and this collection is a testament to how God saw them through the darkest of times. It is my anthem of the moment. The song comes from a deep place of pain, yet gives great glory to our mighty God who heals us both physically and emotionally.

Wrapping it up, almost 18 years ago we had our wedding reception at the Sunnybrook Estates. (On the hospital grounds.) During the reception Nick claimed the verse from Jeremiah 29:11-13 over our lives:
"For I know the plans I have for you" declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future . . . you will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you."

CT Results...Praise Jesus!
Just found out that my CT scan results are good! Cancer gone from my liver that had lesions "too numerous to count". Praise Jesus!
Surgery is able to proceed on January 15th.
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
